Amber’s story: Finding a Passion for Bean Water

Amber’s Story: Finding a passion for bean water

Barista Trainer

Amber is one of our barista trainers here at BSP!

So often in my barista training classes I get asked where I got my passion for coffee. The truth is, I wasn’t born a budding beverage enthusiast (I don’t think anyone is) and I never planned to build a career in coffee. If you’ve got a dream, something you’ve always wanted to do… firstly, I’m jealous secondly, off you go, chase it! I’ve never considered myself to be either overly passionate or ambitious and so my love for coffee didn’t start out that way.

When I was 14, I really wanted a part-time job because I wanted to be able to buy my own cd’s. That, if nothing else, should give you an indication that it was a pretty long time ago. Luckily, my mum’s best friend owned a Gloria Jean’s, which at the time seemed like the peak of quality coffee as I was partial to very caramelly latte (sophisticated, I know). Throughout high school and into my university years I worked with them, mostly because it was comfortable, close to my house and I got to work with some of my best friends. I started studying law and thought that soon my days of coming home reeking of coffee would be over.

However, one night on the radio I heard that SEEK had launched a brand-new app and I decided to try it out. I remember searching, simply: barista. The job on the top of the list was for a barista trainer, but the application date had expired, and as a 20-year-old shift manager, I was hardly qualified to teach barista classes in Perth. However, for some reason I can’t explain, I decided to apply anyway. A few weeks went by and I received a phone call that completely changed the trajectory of my life. Somehow, I landed a job as a barista trainer for the largest commercial roaster in the country and I quickly realised that I knew absolutely nothing about… coffee. I’d spent 7 years making it, but honestly, I’d never really taken the time to understand it. I knew that barista classes in Perth existed, but I’d never taken one.

Over the next 3 years, I was fortunate enough to work with and learn from some of the most experienced and talented baristas in Australia and I found that the more I learned, the more I cared. I learnt more about coffee than I ever thought there was to know and started to appreciate it in ways that I never had before. 15 years after the beginning of my journey, I’m still learning new things all the time.

Working as a barista and trainer has allowed me to travel around the world, find barista training near me (wherever that was) and meet, work with and teach fellow baristas from all walks of life, before returning to teach barista classes in Perth. I managed to find a career that’s been so rewarding, out of what started as a casual job to get me through school. It may be just bean water, but the industry continues to evolve, and I know that I’ll never run out of things to learn.
