According to an American study entitled “Beverage caffeine intakes in the U.S” an espresso contains 75mg of caffeine only 5mg less than a ‘Red Bull style energy drink’. While a cup of drip-filter coffee contains a whopping 145 milligrams of caffeine. What about all the tea drinkers out there? Well the study shows that your one-minute brew of a generic black tea contains almost 60mg.

So how much caffeine is too much?

Outside of the jittery addicts screaming the necessity of the caffeine based diet, is there a correct figure? According to the Mayo Clinic you shouldn’t regularly exceed 400mg of caffeine. Their assessments of the caffeine content however appear to be quite different calling this magic figure 4 cups of brewed coffee or 2 ‘energy’ shot drinks.

What are the negative effects of caffeine?

Many of the negative effects of heavy daily caffeine consumption are fairly obvious such as insomnia, raised heart-rate and restlessness. Caffeine has also be linked to nervousness and irritability as well as muscle tremors. A less known side-effect is the upset stomach and also muscle cramps.
These effects are all very reliant on the individual, things like age, health and body mass as well as tolerance all play a huge role in how much is recommended and the possible side effects.

If you are interested to know how caffeine is affecting your sleep then you should try the UPCoffee App from Jawbone that helps you keep track of your caffeine consumption and using a few details about yourself to workout roughly how this will be effecting your sleep. I tried it recently and was amazed by how much more caffeine I was having than I thought. The only flaw is that measurements are in fluid ounces so it takes a second of mental arithmetic to translate, not so difficult when you’re jacked up on caffeine. (1 US fluid ounce = 29.5 ml)
The more scientific among you might want to pair it with the Up wristband which tracks sleep movements and activity during the day and syncs it with your smartphone app, but maybe that’s a bit more information than you need.

Beating The 60-Shot Espresso

60 Shot EspressoBrowsing the internet for coffee interest stories I came a across an amazing article entitled ‘Texas Man Still Buzzing From 60 Espresso Shot Starbucks Drink’. Well that is a title that definitely caught my eye. Following the link I discovered the story of a man who bought a Starbucks coffee so large it included 500ml of whipped cream, several thousand calories and 60 SHOTS OF ESPRESSO!

Now I’m a coffee lover and ‘caffiend’ (apologies), but that seems like it might be a bit much for me. Well some further research found that this was the record for ‘The Most Shots of Espresso In Officially Served Drink’ and what a world record. I assume there must be countless ‘unofficial’ attempts to take this most illustrious crown. So 60 shots, 5 days and I assume several trillion heart beats later Chifari was the world record holder, until now!
Last month a man in Terre Haute strolled into his local Starbucks armed with a drinks cooler and ordered a ‘Venti Mocha Cookie Frappuccino’ with 77 extra shots of espresso. Now, that contains a perception altering 6000mg of caffeine. At $71.35US this is now officially the world’s largest coffee! And you guys thought that we’d struggle to find enough news stories to write a weekly blog.

Don’t Try This Here

We must say however, that we are unfortunately not going to be able to host our own world record attempt. It’s not because this is one of the strangest competitions we’ve ever come across, or because drinking 60 days-worth of caffeine in one drink is dangerous or even because the queue would be through the door by the time we finished serving it. It is in fact because although they ‘do not condone or encourage this type of behaviour’ Starbucks is the only place where you can officially attempt this world record. They do not encourage but they do enable, so with Starbucks opening in Perth next year you will have to wait.

Is Coffee Healthier Than a Smoothie?

Smoothie
This might seem like a simple no, but there are actually many other pieces of information we need to consider. You would be forgiven for thinking that this was a clear cut comparison of fruit v caffeine, but you would be wrong.

There seem to be a million and one studies proving that coffee causes everything from cancer to heart attacks. This is mainly by comparing a group of people that drink coffee to a group that don’t. However this is not actually a fair comparison. Another study shows that us coffee drinkers are far more likely to have other ‘bad’ habits like drinking alcohol or smoking.

A study of 130,000 men and women over 20 years and detailed ’The Relationship of Coffee Consumption and Mortality’. Please note, that study was actually incredibly dull reading but this is just proof that it exists. They showed that there was nothing to suggest that regular coffee consumption was in any associated with an increase in mortality rates. So Coffee and Science 1, everyone else 0.

So where do smoothies come into this. Well, in a study published in the British Medical Journal titled < a href=http://www.bmj.com/content/347/bmj.f6935>’Fruit Consumption and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes’ showed that drinking juice and smoothies greatly increases the chance of developing Diabetes. Again, feel free to skip the study but it is real.

Next point: Whilst fruit is full of antioxidants, vitamins and everything else we should be filling ourselves with, they also contain a large amount of sugar. The sugar raises insulin levels and a persistently high level of insulin is also associated with types of cancer.
Now I’m not saying that fruit causes cancer. While much of the aforementioned ‘good stuff’ will fight cancer, the same study showed that so much of it is lost in the juicing process.

So… next time you’re looking for a healthy morning pick me up don’t go for the evil, diabetes causing fruit smoothie. Stop in for a coffee, it’s good for you!

I’m Not Cool Enough For Coffee

Old Man Cafe
I first discovered coffee whilst at school. After years of procrastination, I suddenly realised that if I did intend to sleep for 8 hours every night, there really wasn’t going to be enough time left to learn everything I’d missed. After moving from smashing pots of cold instant coffee I moved into cafes and started to appreciate the finer sides of coffee making. Now, over a decade later I am a bonafide coffee snob, café aficionado and caffeine advocate. What I have noticed however, is the change in the culture of coffee. There seems to have been a seismic shift into the edgy, artistic cultural niche with the rise of the hipster barista and a level of coffee snobbery.

At Jessie’s Café we focus on our coffee and let everything else just happen, but there seems to be a huge trend in café’s in Perth toward the surroundings. Obviously the coffee is still a major part of their business but I’m finding myself drinking more and more over extracted espressos served by poorly trained baristas surrounded by a mixture of wine bottles, exposed brick and blaring electronic music by bands that I have never heard of.

I realise I may be sounding like a grumpy middle aged man complaining about how things were ‘better in my day’ but I’m still just the lower side of 30. The world has not changed a whole heap since I was one of these ‘struggling writer’ types trying desperately to show everyone my new MacBook, loudly discussing the fun I can barely remember from last Friday night, and trying to avoid the waitress’ eye so I don’t have to tell her that even after 3 hours I’m still on my first coffee. It seems now, that rather than fulfilling their dreams these people have started to own and run the cafes and are actually targeting that crowd.

I don’t know about you but all I want from a café is a comfortable chair, a nice smile from the barista and above all, a good cup of coffee.

Too much coffee

Can you have too much coffee? No, I like it.

I’m writing this at 7:30 in the morning and I fear I may have had too much coffee. My hands are flying across the keyboard at what somewhere over 140 words a minute. I’m pumped! I’m jacked! I can take on the world! As my mind was flying this morning it occurred to me that I drink a lot of coffee, and I mean a lot. I’m normally a 3/4 a day kinda guy but today, I’ve already had 4. Then I saw on Barista School Perth that the average person in Finland drinks more than that… EVERYDAY! Don’t believe me, check it out. Those Barista Trainers do their research.

Obviously 4 coffees in an hour and a half is a large amount, in the same way that 4 beers in 90 minutes will cause some people to introduce themselves slurrily to everyone they meet including, potentially, the floor. But I am talking about my regular 3 or 4 coffees a day, is this too much? Looking at the Barista School infographic I see that it is nearly triple the normal amount here in the Australia, but I maintain that it’s not a problem. I put it to you that every coffee I drink is not only justifiable but almost unavoidable. Here’s my case:

Coffee #1: Wake me up

This is my most important coffee of the day. I start work early and I have a long old commute, so my 5:30 alarm has never been a welcoming sound. Rather than play the cat and mouse game of hoping the 5 minutes extra sleep between will somehow replace the 4 hours I desire, I drag myself out of of bed and go straight to the coffee machine. No shower, no emails, no stretching and certainly no words, only coffee! This is when I actually wake up, before that I am a zombie with no power, strength, skills or knowledge just a shell that looks a bit like the guy you know. I have actually tested how long I will stay in my pre-coffee haze without my caffeine fix. I woke up one Thursday and tried to test it out and a mere 36 hours later I finally managed to grunt out my first words.

Any arguments? I think that the morning coffee pick me up is common enough, and anyone who does try to argue will have to explain my state to the boss.

Coffee #2: Welcome to work

I work for a cafe! Not just any cafe, I work for Jessie’s Cafe who, in my biased opinion, serves the best coffee in Perth and in my completely unbiased opinion…. nope, still the best coffee in Perth! How am I, a coffee lover, supposed to get to work and not have a coffee. In fact I think it impressive that I, usually, only have 1! Also, this marks my first foray into an actual conversation, beyond a nod at the bus driver or heaven forbid having to negotiate topping up my smart rider.

I can tell by the droves of you that come through the doors every day, that this will not be highly contested. Jess, Lloyd and now Laura and Leonie are really good at what they do, not only on the coffee machine, but also meeting zombies like me and turning them into functioning human beings.

Coffee #3: Lunch was tiring

I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge sufferer from the post lunch lull. I eat my lunch, normally at my desk, pause for about 12 minutes to check up on the news, Facebook, Twitter and occasionally if I’m feeling particularly carefree Instagram, then back to work. I type feverishly for a further 18 seconds and then bam, I am curling up around my keyboard. So where do I go? What can possible do to pick me up? Did I mention I work for a Cafe! So it’s now 1:30 and I am 3 coffees deep.

Coffee #4: It’s not bedtime yet

Whether I’m working late or out with friends, my early starts have a massive affect on my evenings. At around 6:30 I will yawn and if I don’t take quick, decisive action, at around 7:30 I will sleep. How much fun do I sound?

This 4th coffee isn’t even for me! I need to work, for the bosses sake, and I need to be awake otherwise my friends will miss out on my charming wit and who are you to deprive them?

So there is my case. Do I drink too much coffee? Please feel free to make suggestions as to which coffees can be cut, but I think both know I’m right.

Note: This post was written in under 10 minutes, how? Too much coffee!

The Little Known Truth About Bad Coffee – One Man’s Struggle Without Coffee Beans

I Need Coffee Beans
***DISCLAIMER*** This is not a coffee bean buying guide.

As a man in my extremely mid 20s I have become more and more reliant on my morning coffee. It is my saving grace, the light at the beginning of the tunnel, before all the terrible things that happen to make me look for its counterpart at the other end. Without it I don’t really function… at all. This has been an upward battle, with my dependence being sated by my trusty coffee machine…

My coffee machine broke! I would tell you the model and make but I feel that introducing you to her at this terrible point in her life would undermine how previously reliable she’s been to me, and trust me I have come to rely very heavily on her over the years. I will therefore be calling her, as I have nearly every morning, Geraldine. The reason behind this name is personal and private and to be honest makes me seem like a child (intriguing right?).Well, Geraldine said her final goodbye and I have spent the last week without her. In her final moments she spurted out a luke-warm, granulated cup of muck that was barely recognisable as coffee, which of course I drank out of solidarity, it was the least I could do.
Well this brings me to this morning, I woke up early feeling even less fresh than usual and turned to my new Geraldine Substitute, Geraldine Light, something the real Geraldine could have… oh you don’t know her, sorry. Well I the new version is not a new coffee machine, it is not a nice plunger, it is instant coffee! Now please, professionals, coffee connoisseurs and even pretentious band-wagonistas among you do not judge me. I am a man in mourning, I could not simply go out and replace my Geraldine, would you tell a grieving wife to ‘move on’ at the funeral? Well this is my first day without Jessie’s Roasting Company Signature Blend Coffee Beans, available online and in store, also served in several café’s across Perth served up by my darling Graldine, and the effects have been disastrous.

Rather than being gently brought into the world by the rich, full texture of my morning double espresso, I was dragged, kicking and screaming into morning monotony with a brown watery assault on the senses. The effects were disastrous. I managed to leave the house this morning without my laptop, and then again without my glasses, this of course led me to miss my bus. My mood at this point was so low that the inane shouting of schoolchildren caused me to turn my head and stare at one of them. This of course led the child (who at this point, I realised was at least 17 and about 6 foot 2) and 3 of his friends to ask that ever-leading question, “What?” I bravely, said “Nothing”, turned around and got back to staring out the window and being tired. This was not enough for the man (I have decided that to save face, he should be a man, albeit a man in school uniform) who on his way out clipped my head with his bag in what I can only assume was a passive aggressive assertion of dominance, well the final joke was on him because stood up, looked him in the eye and punched him straight in the face sending him flying off the bus in a… okay I didn’t do that, but I did give him quite a stern look.

Upon arriving at work, late, I realised I had of course forgotten my notes on the work I didn’t do last night and was not prepared for my 10 o’clock meeting because I had… forgotten. It is now lunchtime and having forgotten to make anything this morning I had to go out and buy some, but my card was declined so had to use my already overdue credit card. This of course annoyed the staff here (not at Jessie’s Café) who I am sure are spitting in my food and laughing at me typing away on my coffee stained laptop.

Now you may argue that that is not all down to the passing of Geraldine but down to my own lack of organisation, and you may be right, but I choose to blame terrible coffee!

Note: Geraldine was a large attendant at the sandwich shop I bought my lunch at on the way to school who would always have my sandwich pre-made with a coke before fixing my collar giving me a hug and telling me that one day I would make some girl very happy.

Happy 2nd Birthday Jessie’s Cafe

old signatureSo this week it was Jessie’s Café 2nd Birthday! So we survived the first two years – everyone always says the first two years are always the hardest for a starting business – I kind of hope they are right! Just 2 years ago we were a coffee machine and a washing line, now we’re a cafe, a coffee roasting company and a Barista School and I really can’t believe it.

Has it gone quick? Yes and No – when I look back on what we have achieved I feel like yes its gone quick, but at times I did think “what am I doing?” (Those times, were when Gabe and I were standing in the old Jessie’s Café in the middle of summer in a huge warehouse with no air con – yep we were feeling very sorry for ourselves!)

Why did I ever have those doubts – jessie's cafe becomes Jessie's roasting companyI am amazed at its success. Every day Jessie’s Café pumps with our faithful regulars as well as new faces day in and day out. Our Barista classes are up and running weekly and Gabe is roasting coffee that is truly superb. We now have our own blends of beans which I am proud to put our name on.

Everything we worked towards in the last two years – I feel has all come together. It has been the most rewarding learning curve for me and I look forward to what lies ahead. I am very lucky to be surrounded by amazing people every day. Gabe and Lloyd, are incredible, their enthusiasm and passion keeps me going, but mostly we all have to thank our customers. Without you guys, there would be no Jessie’s Cafe, no Barista School Perth and no Jessie’s Roasting Company.

Thank you for being so supporting of Jessie’s Café, we really, honestly couldn’t have done it without you.

Until next time don’t forget “life is too short to drink bad coffee”

Love Jess from Jessie’s Café x

Guess My Coffee – A Cafe Calamity

It’s Monday morning and I’m nursing a hangover as I walk into a café in East Vic Park. Now I’m not going to mention the name of the café, not because I don’t want to give credit to competitors, but because I would like to do my best to distance myself from it and the people who work there. I wander blearily through the doors and decline a seat from the painfully cheery waitress and mumble something about a takeaway coffee. I stumble over to the counter and wait my turn behind a young woman, dressed for work. The young Barista looks up and shoots her the kind of smile saved by the confident for the young and attractive women. Most of you will know the one I’m talking about, the slight curl of the mouth, the curious eyes that the onlooker might mistake for flirtation. I can’t help but draw an unflattering comparison between this confident, young barista and my bleary eyed, dishevelled self, man I hate this guy.

The hipster barista flicks his hair away from his bespectacled face with one tattooed hand and asks for her order. The young woman pauses. Now I can’t see her face but the slight bend of her knee suggests that she may be playing a very similar game. I hate this guy! She too moves her hand to her hair, “Guess!” My eyes are up, it’s not often you get to see a love story unfold before 8am.

The Barista, let’s call him Romeo, doesn’t hesitate “Guess? Okay, but if I do, you have to give me your number”. What? How have we got here? You’ve pushed it too far buddy. I envisage the manager coming over and firing him on the spot, putting some order back into the world. To my own inward devastation the woman, whom in my head I know only as Juliet, giggles and agrees.

“Let me see” Romeo ponders as he looks her up and down, barely hiding his approval, “Smart suit, cute smile, is that a faded club stamp on your wrist or a tattoo? So you had a good weekend… and a gym bag as well interesting… Career woman, take care of yourself but you like to have fun… I’m gonna say…” I have now given up any pretence of doing anything else, I am clinging onto Romeo’s every word, he’s all in, the moment of truth, let’s see you worm your way out of this one. “Soy, Flat white, extra shot one sugar” I’m looking directly at Romeo now, waiting for this to blow up gloriously in his face. I shift my gaze to the back Juliet’s head and wait for what seems like an eternity but must have only been half a second…

“No sugar” she giggles. NO…. WAY! There is no… Romeo turns to make the drink under the adoring eye of our Juliet. She turns slightly and I see that as I expected, she is attractive. “How did you do that?”

“Well you do this long enough and you notice the signs, you learn to read people, you know you can tell a lot about a person from their coffee order…” He turns back with the drink and grabs a sugar. “I said no…” Romeo smiles and hands her the sugar, the Juliet giggles and accepts it. My instant dislike is now battling with a begrudging respect. Juliet hands over her number and floats out of the café.
I’m up, Romeo turns to me, smile gone, “What do you want?” Now I don’t know if it was jealousy of him, disappointment with the way the world treats the non-attractive non-females in this world or just the hangover but in an instant, any hint of respect was gone. No, Romeo, I am going to expose you. It’s a trick, you saw her order before, you can’t do that. Well mate your luck has run out!

“Guess!” I thought. In my head I spat those words with such venom that he Romeo would have done well to stay standing, so no one was as surprised as me to hear the “Wow, that was amazing, how did you do that?”, come on brain, get with the programme. Romeo was clearly taken aback to find out that the unkempt ogre in ripped jeans and converse had been listening in to the subtle to and fro of his wooing. In my defence, any man who still uses the word wooing could probably do with some guidance. He politely gave me the same spiel about reading people and experience, but it felt somehow less heartfelt than before. “Well” I said, sure I could win him over “how about you do me?” Romeo’s face conveyed a special mix of confusion and fear. Realising what I had said I quickly shouted “Don’t do me, not like… I mean… Guess my coffee!”

This kind of bumbling awkwardness, that is considered attractive and endearing in so many English, ‘Four Weddings’ type films, seemed to scare Romeo. But he obliged, I feel now more out of fear for his safety and an overwhelming desire to get rid of me. He quickly looked me up and down, as I did my best to make sure he noticed my scruffy smart appearance complete with battered leather shoulder bag and converse, in the vain hope that he would take me for a bohemian writer type marching to the beat of my own drum. “Long Mac?” I did my best to hide the disappointment on my face. In a sudden moment of clarity my mind replayed the last 2 minutes and with a slightly sweatier and panicked take on Hugh Grant-like embarrassment ordered my double espresso and glared desperately at my phone while I waited for my coffee.
I don’t know whether Romeo does possess some magical powers of observation or if that was a lucky guess. I’m not even sure if he chose right or if Juliet was just so taken with our hero’s charm and confidence that she convinced herself he was right. What this does prove though, is that I should not be allowed to talk to people until I’ve had my morning coffee.

Why do you love Coffee?

Jessie's CafeCoffee obviously plays an enormous part in our lives here at Jessie’s Cafe. It’s our livelihood; it’s what we do every day. But it’s more than that. We all got into this industry because we love coffee. We’ve turning a hobby into a passion then into a job. Think about us like musicians, obviously our lives are far more decadent, I mean our Christmas Party would have made even the most debaucherous rock star’s memoir look like a family picnic, but most musicians played music because they loved it and then someone told them it could be a career. Even if we’d all gone off and got normal jobs, and worked in banks, schools and law firms, we would still love coffee. If you see Gabe, Lloyd or Jess on their off day, or after the Café has closed they will still make you coffee with the same care and attention that goes into every cup they pour for our customers. If you ask Gabe a question about roasting or Lloyd about the beans, you see a light in their eyes as they exhort the virtues of a new product or technique they heard about. Their enthusiasm and excitement extend way beyond any ‘pride in their work’. Coffee for Gabe is an art form. For Lloyd it’s the joy of interacting with customers and students and for Jess it’s the smile it puts on people’s faces.

Now we realise that we are an extreme group, tainted with an almost maniacal obsession. But we want to know what it means to our customers. We are looking for one sentence answers about what coffee means to you. What part does it play in your life? When do you drink it? Whatever your answer we’d . love to hear from you. So get in touch, on here, on Google Plus, Facebook or tweet us @BaristaSchoolP. The best answer will receive a voucher for our Home Barista Class or Commercial Barista Training at Barista School Perth, and a free bag of Jessie’s Cafe Coffee Beans.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Coffee Roaster Trip 3 – Ona and Coffee Roasters Australia

This is the 3rd and final part of Gabe and Tony’s Coffee Roaster fact finding trip.Ona This week they’re leaving Delano in Wollongong and, after some hairy moments in the car, arriving in Canberra and Brisbane to see roasters, Ona Coffee and Coffee Roasters Australia.

The next morning, we were off to Canberra!! I took the wheel for this leg of the journey. It was about a 3 hour drive to Canberra from Wollongong. The drive was pretty spectacular. We live a glorious country I tell you. Such beautiful scenery!

We visited a couple of coffee roasteries in Canberra and the one that stood out heaps was Ona Coffee. The people that work at Ona were good friends of mine and we have competed against each other in National Barista Competitions. So it was good to meet up with them, and see what advice they had. They have three roasters in their roastery, pretty Diedrichs and Probats. Which Head Roaster, Sam Corra uses to turn green beans into beautiful roasted coffee. They also have started a green bean business which is doing pretty well. Tony obviously heard about this and saw another chance to expand. I think that pretty soon we’ll be milking cows and growing his own sugar!

We flew out to Brisbane early the next morning!! We got into Brisbane at 8:30am and immediately got into our hire car and drove straight to Coffee Roasters Australia who are the distributors for the Has Garanti and Proaster coffee roasters. We met up with Mark of Coffee Roasters Australia who showed us around his warehouse and gave us a demonstration of the 5kg Has Garanti Roaster,

Coffee Roaster, Gabe, Barista and Coffee Roaster

Here he is, with his pride and joy. We have no idea what he is doing. Listening to the heartbeat of the Coffee Roaster?

taking us through a whole roast process from beginning to end. He then took us to one of his customers in Brisbane who had a 15kg and 30kg Has Garanti. It was good to see the Has Garantis in action on a proper roasting day and we were quite impressed with what it could do! For the price point, it does an amazing job of producing well roasted beans. If you know what you’re doing that is!

We ended off the trip with a visit to one of Tony’s mates. Steve lived in the Sunshine Coast with his lovely family and we were to put up the night at their lovely residence. It was a beautiful property which had little jetty over a river at the back end of the property. It was good to just chill out sitting on the jetty with a cold one soaking in the idyllic location and just having a breather after the crazy week that has just passed! Steve and his family put on a lovely dinner for us and we had a great time chatting, laughing and just having a huge ball of a time.

Early next morning, we said our goodbyes to Steve and drove out to Brisbane Airport to catch the plane back to Perth. Tired, excited and with a lot to think and talk about, we were finally home.

Gabe

So there we have it, Gabe and Tony, four states in six days. It was a whirlwind trip. They learnt a lot from the many different people they met along the way. But what roaster did they decide on? Well if you look in the back, behind the counter you will see a 5 kilo Has Garanti Roaster. Apparently it’s the best value, bang for your buck roaster, able to churn out great beans consistently.
